How to Stay Consistent With the Gym (When Motivation Runs Out)

Practical ways to stay consistent with your training when motivation dips – from planning your week to making workouts easier to start.

Almost everyone starts a new routine full of motivation. The challenge is keeping going when work gets busy, the weather turns or progress feels slow. Consistency is a skill – and it can be built.

1. Plan your sessions like appointments

Decide which days and times you'll train at the start of each week. Put them in your calendar.

2. Start smaller than you think

Two or three manageable sessions a week that you actually do are better than an ambitious plan you abandon after a fortnight.

3. Know exactly what you'll do

Walking into the gym without a plan makes it easy to wander around, lose focus or skip it altogether. Having your exercises, sets and reps written down removes the guesswork.

4. Have a 'minimum' session

On tough days, commit to a short version – even 20 minutes. Often you'll end up doing more, and even if you don't, you've kept the habit going.

5. Track your progress

Seeing your weights, reps or step count go up over time is one of the best motivators there is. Use a notebook or an app.

6. Don't let one missed session become a missed month

Missed a workout? That's normal. Just make sure the next one happens.

Structure makes consistency easier

A plan that fits your real schedule is much easier to stick to. Our monthly gym plans are built around the days and time you actually have – and refreshed as you progress.
